Committed to the system of “Cut-Paintings”, “E-Arts” are computer-generated works of art that follow the principles of this system and are digitally realised by Wolf-Peter Miksch. The computer assumes the role of the brush – a tool of expression, not an autonomous creator. Artificial intelligence plays no part: every form, every structure arises from a deliberate artistic act.

A “Cut-Painting” always consists of three layers. The first – and hindmost – layer is usually a square image in the final dimensions of the work. The second and third layers cannot easily be separated, as they – explicitly rooted in the system of “Cut-Paintings” – comprise two fundamentally equivalent, rectangular and equally sized images. These are typically cut into eleven strips and interwoven into a new square composition whose expressiveness and intensity are thereby amplified.

Through the interlacing of 11×11 strips, one hundred small square “interspaces” emerge, through which the first layer becomes visible and is equally integrated into the composition.

The number one hundred here stands not only for the great round number – for fulfilment and the “perfect good” – but also for the nonchalance of this number, which historically signified “many” rather than precisely one hundred.
